Adobe Illustrator 10 and Windows 7 Basic

My copy of Adobe Illustrator 10  has been serving me well even up to now. Installed on both my Netbook and Desktop running on XP with SP3. Why I’m still on XP is a topic for another time.

A friend, who also happened to have a copy of the same Adobe Illustrator version, asked for help in trying to get it to run on his new and powerful laptop running Windows 7 Home.  He said installation goes as expected but when he tries to run the app via the usual shortcut icons, the splash page just appears briefly and then nothing else happens.

I’ve never had this sort of  problem before so I did a little research.  A few clicks and I came across a page that got me up to speed on how to solve the problem.

The solution was quite simple. Allow me to repost the text.

  1. Right click on the desired file which is not running under Windows 7 and click on ‘Properties’
  2. From options choose ‘Compatibility’
  3. Under Compatibility mode options check the box where it says ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:’ and then select Windows XP version in which you want to run your program from the drop down list.
